You can't reverse age, but you can avoid the dumb stuff that kills systems early:

  1. Change your filter every 1 to 3 months. A clogged filter restricts airflow, freezes the coil, and burns out the blower. The single biggest preventable failure mode.
  2. Clean the outdoor condenser coil every spring. Garden hose, low pressure, top-down rinse. Don't use a pressure washer.
  3. Keep landscaping 2 feet clear of the outdoor unit. Pull weeds and trim shrubs back.
  4. Get a fall and spring service from a licensed HVAC contractor. A $150 tune-up catches a $300 capacitor before it kills a $3,000 compressor.
  5. Install a condensate float switch. Cheap insurance against a $5,000 ceiling repair.
  6. Don't run the AC below 70 degrees. Modern systems aren't designed for it. You'll freeze the evaporator coil and stress the compressor.
